Marshalltown students place at state events; board approves travel to national contests

Marshalltown Community School District trustees on Monday heard a string of student presentations celebrating placements at state competitions and approved out-of-state travel for National History Day contestants going to the national contest.
Student groups reported competitive results and community projects: the Envirothon team placed second in the state and detailed forestry, soils, aquatics and wildlife work; an IJAG team created a county food-resource sign, conducted a food drive and finished second at the Build My Future leadership competition; and multiple National History Day (NHD) students described their projects and noted they advanced to nationals.
John Ronick, IJAG specialist, said students identified 37 food resources in Marshall County and created a QR-linked sign listing them; the class mounted a food drive that gathered about 200 nonperishable items and won second place in the statewide competition. Ronick said the signs will be posted in district schools and potentially around the county; students and community sponsors committed to help fund production.
Envirothon team members described hands-on tests (tree identification and measurement, water-quality sampling, soil pits and wildlife ID) and said the team advanced to the state and placed second. Student presenters and coach Miss Fritzelle outlined that four of the team were seniors who had worked on Envirothon for several years.
Board members also heard from National History Day students who won state-level placements. Board discussion approved a request to travel to College Park, Maryland, for the national contest; the motion to approve out-of-state travel carried 7-0.
Superintendent Theron Schutte and staff highlighted student success at the MCC (Iowa Valley) commencement where multiple MHS students earned college credits or associate degrees while in high school.
Why it matters: Student success at state and national competitions reflects local academic and career-technical programming and offers civic visibility for district programs. The board's approval of travel permits students to participate at the national level.
The board applauded participants and approved travel arrangements for the NHD representatives to attend nationals at the University of Maryland.
