A representative from Constituting America presented the nonprofit's "Relevancy of the Constitution" program and said it can be offered to schools at no charge.
Miss Colas, the Constituting America regional representative, described a classroom presentation aimed at grades 4-12 that includes a line-by-line student-language booklet of the Constitution, pre- and post-surveys, and a contest with student prizes and a national trip for winners. "Every student gets a copy, their own copy of the declaration and the constitution that they get to keep for themselves," Colas said. She said the organization avoids controversial topics and confines student projects to community-focused issues such as parks or dog parks.
Board members asked whether the program costs the district anything; Colas replied, "Nothing. We have everything we provide to schools is free." She said funding comes from grants and donors and that the nonprofit runs statewide and expanding nationally. Superintendent Dr. Jermanson said administration would follow its curriculum vetting process and contact the group with questions.
Ending: Administration will evaluate the program materials and determine whether to schedule classroom presentations or integrate resources into curriculum reviews; no contract or formal adoption was made at the meeting.
