The Sioux City Community School District Board of Directors voted unanimously in a special meeting in January 2025 to expel “Student B” from North Middle School and all Sioux City Community middle schools for the remainder of the 2024–25 school year.
The action followed a closed-session discussion under Iowa Code section 21.5(1)(e) on whether to conduct a hearing about the student. In open session, Dr. Uhlerwein, superintendent of the Sioux City Community School District, recommended expulsion, saying, “The school administration of the Sioux City Community School District recommends that student B be expelled from North Middle School and all Sioux City Community Middle Schools for the remainder of the 20 20 four-twenty 25 school year for violation of the rules and regulations of the school district, disobeys classroom rules or engages in disorderly conduct or fighting.”
Board members moved to adopt the superintendent’s recommendation. Following a roll-call vote, all seven board members—Emke, George, Greenwell, Lee, Myers, Michaelson and Miller—voted yes and the motion passed.
The meeting record shows the board first voted to enter closed session citing Iowa Code section 21.5(1)(e) to consider whether to conduct a hearing regarding expulsion. After the closed session, the superintendent presented the recommendation and the board voted on that recommendation. No additional discussion of the case is recorded in the public transcript.
The expulsion applies for the remainder of the current 2024–25 school year. The transcript records the district’s stated grounds for the recommendation as violation of district rules, including disobeying classroom rules and engaging in disorderly conduct or fighting. The meeting did not record further details about the underlying incident, any prior disciplinary history, appeal rights, or whether the family was present or represented.
The board adjourned the special meeting after taking the action.
