Cedar Hill ISD board approves 10-minute increase to daily schedule to bank snow days

The Cedar Hill ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously July 21 to add 10 minutes to the district school day, a change officials said will increase instructional minutes and allow the district to bank additional days to avoid moving instruction into traditionally observed community days.
District staff recommended the change to increase the daily minimum from 450 to 460 minutes. The presentation said the 10-minute extension would allow the district to “bank” the equivalent of roughly 78,000 instructional minutes districtwide, which staff calculated would provide five make-up days if needed.
Administration told the board they coordinated with transportation and human resources, and said the change aligns with Chapter 21 teacher contract provisions. Trustees and staff discussed communications planning for families and schedules; staff said they will work with the communications office to notify parents of any start- and end-time changes prior to school opening.
The motion to adopt the added minutes passed without opposition. Trustees asked that the district publicize the rationale and benefits to families and staff and to include the change in the district’s back-to-school communications.
