Birdville ISD reported Aug. 28 that its summer construction and maintenance program included approximately $36.5 million in work covering roofing, HVAC, flooring, electrical, plumbing and an elevator upgrade.
Dr. Scott Niven, presenting the bond construction update, said roofing, fluid-applied coatings, overlays and reroofs were completed at a number of campuses and that two roofs remained in progress. HVAC work included completion of the first phase at Smithfield Middle School and other phase work that will continue next summer; flooring replacements at Haltom Middle School were finished; exterior lighting upgrades and new hot-water heaters were installed at multiple campuses; sewer pipe replacement took place at Haltom High School; and an elevator upgrade was completed at Birdville High School. Niven said much of the multi-year HVAC work was divided across summers to fit the district’s limited 60-day summer windows for major projects.
Contractors were reported to be preparing materials and work for remaining reroofing and to have ordered materials for a major sanctuary-area roof replacement. The district said it will begin a phased fire-alarm replacement this fall where new and old systems will run in parallel to avoid any gap in alarm coverage.
Trustees praised the maintenance and construction teams. One trustee asked whether the district had funds within the current roofing budget to complete remaining emergency work; the district confirmed savings from other roofing projects were used to include the additional work. The district estimated some final exterior landscaping and turf installations would complete within a week for a facility near the FAC.
The construction update followed the district’s bond program schedule and was presented as information; no new contract awards were made at the Aug. 28 meeting.
