Parks staff updated the commission on recreation programming, community events and a regional public‑health advisory.
Courtney, the recreation superintendent, said summer programming is winding down and fall leagues are starting, including youth soccer and fall softball. She reported Miracle League participation has grown to 71 participants, up from roughly the mid‑20s in early seasons. Staff encouraged civic groups and volunteers to serve as “buddies” for Miracle League games.
Staff announced a Brookside Park centennial celebration set for Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to noon; the mayor and Iowa State President Wintersteen are scheduled speakers, and the event will include a ribbon cutting for a new playground and partner demonstrations.
On public‑health matters, parks staff said Iowa State University reports increased West Nile virus activity in central Iowa this season. Staff reminded park users that mosquito control (fogging) continues and advised taking personal precautions such as insect repellent and long sleeves during peak mosquito hours.
Staff closed the update by thanking seasonal staff and encouraging public input on CIP and park issues at the Sept. 10 meeting.
