The Sandusky City Commission on Aug. 25 passed a resolution declaring the necessity of the Cleveland Road safety improvement project (PID 114056), approving specifications and an engineer’s estimate and directing staff to advertise for bids.
City project staff described the procurement timeline and traffic-control expectations. Staff said the city hopes to award the project in October or November and that the procurement documents will include contract language to limit the time the contractor may leave an excavation or disruption in place. “We will not be closing that intersection entirely,” a staff speaker said; the city will require contractors to 'work around' high-traffic locations and include schedule limits for completion of critical intersection elements.
Staff told commissioners the goal is to complete the intersection work before the May travel season (aiming for April) and that some components (signals, poles, other long-lead items) may have long lead times, which is why the overall contract calendar may extend longer even if intersection work is prioritized. Staff said they will provide a more precise timeline after the pre-construction meeting with the selected contractor.
The commission voted to proceed; commissioners asked the staff to emphasize schedule requirements in the contract to minimize disruptions, especially given nearby attractions and peak-season traffic.
