Committee members and parks staff confirmed plans for a Pirate Park event on Sept. 19, timed to coincide with a downtown evening and family activities. Staff said the program will include a movie in the park, pirate-themed activities such as face painting and a treasure map, and encouraged volunteers and trustees to dress up and help run activities.
Parks staff reported they had asked Comcast for a copy of Pirates of the Caribbean (DVD) for the screening and discussed activity ideas used at prior park openings, including face painting, treasure maps and promotional outreach via Pirate Radio and local downtown groups. "People love pirate things," a parks staff member said when describing prior turnout.
Committee members explored ways to enlarge reach — pop-ups at Friday markets, partnering with Mingle on Main downtown promotions, and placing QR-code magnets on town vehicles. Staff noted capacity constraints for staff who may have early work shifts after the event and asked the committee to provide volunteer and planning direction.
Organizers discussed food options, including the possibility of a pig roast, and clarified permitting rules. Parks staff said town regulations prohibit open flames in parks without a special event permit; if an open-flame cooking event is desired, organizers would need to pursue the town’s special event permit and coordinate with private venues such as Old Colorado Brewery as an alternative site.
The committee described the plan as a community-focused movie night with ancillary activities rather than a commercial event and asked staff to return a logistics checklist and volunteer roster. No formal vote was recorded; staff said they will proceed with planning and provide a detailed event plan and permitting checklist for committee review.
