At the meeting, the superintendent said the district will move responsibility for 504 plans under the special-education office to align expertise for writing IEPs and supporting students and parents. The superintendent said the job description assigns the 504 piece to special education and named staff who will assume responsibility.
The superintendent said Gina previously served as special-education director and that Miss McCray will have oversight of the 504 function. At the high school, the superintendent said Dr. White is placing his assistant principal and that Miss McKee and Mr. Grigg, a dean, will lead the 504 work for his campus; Jonathan Burnworth will continue to provide support.
District leaders also told the board they have struggled to hire high-school guidance counselors, reporting the high school currently has two counselors and that the district has "not had much success with it" this year. The superintendent said the district hopes the 504 realignment will provide additional support to guidance staff and students.
The discussion was informational; the board did not take a formal vote on the realignment during the public meeting. Board members welcomed the change and noted the goal is to streamline services and support for students and families.
