The South Lyon City Council on Aug. 25 awarded the sidewalk replacement contract to Luigi Fernandez & Son Cement Company for $119,900 to replace approximately 400 sidewalk flags damaged by tree roots and to perform root removal and restoration.
Public Works staff said the contractor, which previously performed similar work in the city, will be directed to the specific areas to be addressed. The contract will be paid from line item 101-441-974.
Council members raised scheduling concerns for Hidden Creek subdivision, which draws high trick-or-treat attendance; Council member Kurtzweil asked that Hidden Creek be prioritized so sidewalks would be restored before Halloween. Public Works staff said the contractor tentatively planned to begin Sept. 29 and finish by about Oct. 16 and that they were attempting to move the schedule earlier where possible. Council members praised the contractor’s workmanship but acknowledged the company’s heavy workload and outreach to other municipalities.
Council approved the contract by roll-call vote.
Staff said the contractor will remove and dispose of tree roots causing heaved sidewalks and complete restoration where required; staff also said they are pursuing a separate grinding program to address smaller trip hazards at other locations later in the year.
