District facilities staff asked the board on Sept. 8 to approve bids for structural repairs at the Concord Middle School field house after describing progressive foundation movement and water intrusion that, left unaddressed, could cause safety and operational concerns.
Project manager Chuck Taylor said the field house shows a 6.5‑inch wall deflection caused by soil and hydraulic pressure; ongoing water intrusion has damaged electrical systems and other components. Staff said the recommended scope includes excavation around the building, structural repair using buttress support, comprehensive waterproofing and a full electrical replacement tied to the water damage.
Taylor said the problem has been known for more than a decade and that the work was advanced through the budget process; he requested the board approve the bid award for repair work. He described the standard one‑year contractor warranty for construction projects and said that, while the immediate warranty is one year, the repairs are intended to be long‑lasting.
Board members asked about bid details, the engineering firm that designed the repair approach, and whether the project budget had been estimated accurately; Taylor said he relied on RSMeans for cost estimating, had solicited multiple bids and would provide copies of the other bids not published in the packet. Trustees added the item to the consent agenda for the upcoming business meeting.
