Cabarrus County Schools facilities staff asked the board Sept. 8 to approve a bid to repair the Concord Middle School field house, citing a 6.5-inch deflection in a wall caused by soil and hydrostatic pressure, ongoing water intrusion and related electrical-system damage.
Facilities director Chuck Taylor described the scope as excavation around the building, structural repair with buttress elements, new waterproofing and replacement of affected electrical systems. Taylor said the building is still usable but will become unsafe if the work is not done; he reported the project was prioritized through the district budget process and has awaited funding and design for several years.
Why it matters: the field house supports athletics and school activities; structural failure or extended closure would affect daytime programs, after-school athletics and community users. Taylor said the construction contract includes the standard one-year construction warranty for workmanship; the district noted the work is the product of an engineer-designed repair plan.
Procurement: staff said multiple bids were solicited and that the project went through the district procurement process; board members asked for and were told other bid documents are available for review. The board placed the item on consent during the work session.
