The Imperial City Council adopted resolutions to accept 2023 COPS (Citizens’ Option for Public Safety) allocation funds for police department equipment, council members approved unanimously.
Police Chief (presenter identified in agenda as Chief Reel) said the funding will purchase traffic and safety enforcement tools, including reintroducing in‑car video systems that the department previously had but no longer maintains, lidar and radar enforcement equipment, additional radios for reserve officers, and computing equipment needed for lidar calibration and trailer radar operations.
The chief said the in‑car video hardware had reached end of life previously and was not maintained; the grant will allow the department to restore that capability in patrol vehicles in addition to body cameras. The equipment purchases are framed as tools to support traffic enforcement, which the chief described as a “quality of life” priority.
Council adopted the resolutions covering the COPS allocation and associated expenditure plan in a single motion; the vote carried 4–0.
