The Community Services Commission on Sept. 8 finalized assignments for the department's Adopt-a-Park program and clarified expectations for commissioners serving as park liaisons.
Assignments and expectations: staff presented a list of parks and commissioners selected or volunteered as liaisons. As recorded in the meeting, the initial assignments included Grevillea Pocket Park (Grevillea) assigned to Commissioner Weinberger; Doctor Beatrice Solis Memorial Park assigned to Commissioner Lai and Vice Chair Plotkin; Garfield Park assigned to Commissioners Field, Weinberger and Lai (shared coverage noted because the park is large); Orange Grove assigned to Chair Samuels; the skate park assigned to Commissioner Bagasau; the dog park assigned to Vice Chair Plotkin. Staff said commissioners may share responsibility for larger parks and should periodically visit their assigned parks, note maintenance or safety issues and forward photos or requests to staff rather than waiting for the next meeting.
Staff role and follow-up: staff emphasized that commissioners' reports are advisory and that facility maintenance and leased facilities remain staff responsibilities. If commissioners observe urgent maintenance or safety issues, they were asked to send photos to staff so the department can route a public-works request.
Why it matters: the Adopt-a-Park assignments are intended to give commissioners a structured way to monitor park conditions and provide community-specific input to staff, enabling staff to prioritize maintenance and capital requests with better local information.
