Committee reports progress on float construction, site logistics and volunteer tents; requests arborist help for low branches

At the September meeting the South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Committee received an event and site chair report that covered float construction progress, site logistics and infrastructure checks.
Event and site chair James Johns said volunteers have been addressing lighting and power connections and that bathrooms at the site are cleaned on Fridays; committee members were asked to keep restroom doors locked and lids down between uses. Johns said the volunteer tents are not expected to be delivered until around Thanksgiving and that Pacific Gas & Electric (Edison) had inspected cables and indicated the site “seems to be fine,” though further checks remain possible.
Construction leads reported good progress on the float: work on the skirt and deck is advancing, sculpted pieces are in production, and about seven open construction items remained. Brandon Carlson and Jeremy Bruce asked that construction teams send photos to the social media chair for promotional posts; Chris Colburn said he has been uploading photos and will include sponsor shout-outs.
Site logistics included a request to contact the city arborist to trim low branches on Mound Street and near pole wiring so the float can be pulled out in December without interference. The chair said the city arborist has been responsive in prior years and will be contacted about trimming.
Other operational notes: volunteer tent assembly remains a later-season item; the souvenir booth team plans to use lights outside the booth to reduce trip hazards around sprinklers; and the design team is preparing for a variance meeting next week to request permission for a person to ride on the back of the float as a small “Easter-egg” element, including safety details on strapping and exhaust clearance.
The committee did not authorize additional site spending at the meeting; members focused on coordination and scheduling ahead of the busy build months.
