The superintendent publicly recognized Vincent Regalado and the district technology team after an account takeover that resulted in approximately 5,400 outgoing emails, and she said two‑factor authentication (2FA) was launched days after the incident.
Superintendent’s remarks: The superintendent said the incident occurred at a time when the district had no director of technology and during the busiest part of the year for technology staff. She praised Regalado for identifying the problem within five minutes of an account compromise and for coordinating response efforts, saying Regalado “was willing to do whatever was necessary to be able to ensure the success of our school district and to ensure that our school was protected.”
Incident response and partners: The superintendent said Regalado pulled together a response team that included the California Cybersecurity Integration Center, Homeland Security Division, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, the Atascadero Police Department and members of the district cabinet. Staff told the board there had been concern about possible loss of special‑education data and that the team focused on containment, notification and mitigation.
Technical changes: Staff said two‑factor authentication (2FA) was launched districtwide within days of the incident; the superintendent presented a certificate of recognition to Regalado at the meeting.
No formal action required: The board accepted the recognition and thanked staff; no formal policy or contract action was taken at the meeting.
