McLeod County approved participation in a joint powers agreement with the City of Silver Lake to include a 2.5‑block stretch of County Road 2/County Road 92 in the city's grant‑funded infrastructure project; county cost approximately $334,000 paid from local option sales tax.
McLeod County commissioners approved moving forward with a joint powers agreement to include a 2.5‑block stretch of County Road 2 (County Road 92) in the City of Silver Lake’s infrastructure project.
County staff told the board the county will be responsible for about $334,000 of the project costs, to be paid from the county’s local option sales tax construction budget. The city of Silver Lake will carry approximately $1,545,000 of the project, about $1,065,000 of which is expected to come from grant funds.
County staff said the joint project was originally approved in May 2025 and that including the county road in the city’s schedule allows the county to take advantage of available grant funding to complete the work. Andrew (public works staff) presented and commissioners expressed that they previously discussed the value of entering the agreement and saw it as a good investment.
Commissioner Schmaltz moved to approve the county’s concurrence to proceed with the JPA; Commissioner Chachka seconded. The board approved the motion by voice vote.
County staff will proceed with the partnership and apply county construction funds as indicated in the county budget.
