District 207 plans gender-neutral restrooms, awards roofing and tuckpointing contracts

Maine Township High School District 207’s buildings-and-grounds committee reported plans to reconfigure district-office restrooms into gender-neutral facilities and to continue routine facility envelope work, and the board approved multiple construction contracts at the meeting.
Assistant superintendents presented a proposed district-office layout that would convert existing restrooms to gender-neutral facilities; the committee said the plans will comply with school code and that the approximate cost is $250,000. Committee members said additional options will be explored and that the board will be updated when more information is available.
On capital maintenance, the district solicited bids for roofing and masonry repairs that will take place in summer. The board recommended awarding the roofing contract for Maine South to JL Adler Roofing, the lowest responsive bidder, with a base bid of $2,167,000 and a sheet-metal alternate of $2,064,700; the district said the base plus the alternate came in under budget and that the work includes a 30-year warranty. The board also recommended awarding a tuckpointing contract for masonry-wall remediation at Maine South to IWNG (local firm) in the amount of $470,140; committee minutes said the bid included a $40,000 allowance for contingencies.
Committee materials noted that those exterior and envelope projects are standard O&M (operations and maintenance) work and that the district expects to spend approximately $7 million to $9 million annually on facility upkeep outside of referendum funds. Administration said the specific roofing and tuckpointing expenses are not funded from the referendum and that the district will continue a multi-year maintenance schedule.
Why it matters: the projects maintain building safety and longevity and affect summer construction planning, vendor selection and near-term capital spending.
The board approved the construction awards at the meeting. The district said work is scheduled for summer to reduce disruption to school operations.
