The Steele County Commission voted Sept. 9 to approve a purchase contract with Axon for replacement tasers and body-worn cameras after a budget presentation and discussion of grant funding and payment options. The equipment quote was $23,546.40 for two cameras and two tasers, and staff said a U.S. Department of Justice grant of $6,000 would reduce the county’s upfront cost.
Why it matters: Commissioners said the county’s current law-enforcement equipment is five to seven years old and out of warranty; staff reported malfunctions in at least one on-duty camera. Replacing the equipment restores warranty coverage, cloud storage for footage and a service contract that includes periodic device updates and taser recertification.
County staff told commissioners the department could finance the purchase over five years with equal annual payments of $4,709.28, or pay in full. The DOJ grant requires matching funds; speakers described it as a “6 and 6 match” during the meeting, and noted the grant expires this year.
During discussion, commissioners and staff said the service contract would include storage for footage and equipment warranties and that Axon periodically issues updated cameras as part of the agreement. Commissioners asked about timing and ongoing renewal costs; staff said renewal or service costs after five years would require a new contract. The presentation also noted the vendor’s payment plan carries no additional interest in the quote provided.
Motion and vote: Commissioner Strand made the motion to approve the purchase contract; Commissioner Chris seconded. The commission approved the purchase by voice vote; the chair announced “Motion carried.”
Next steps: Staff will proceed with the procurement and work with the finance office to apply the DOJ grant and set up payment terms, as discussed at the meeting.
