Christie Sperling, a resident who said her family has lived near the county fairgrounds since 1988, addressed the Williams County Commission during public comment to urge caution if the county plans to obtain and redevelop the original fairgrounds site.
"My name is Christie Sperling. I live right grounds. I see that you guys are planning to obtain the fairgrounds, right?" Sperling said. She described living across from the racetrack for 34 years and raised multiple concerns: noise and fireworks, apparent lack of pyrotechnic licenses and insurance for fireworks activity since 2001 (a claim she made), ground instability from springs on the south end of the property and narrow roads that she said have produced accidents.
"We cannot stand the noise, the fireworks, and the possibility of being, you know, burned out of our own home," Sperling said. She also warned that digging at the site could disturb three major springs and said property owners had told her apartment construction would be impractical because the ground is unstable.
County staff responded during the meeting that, to date, the county has "signed an intent to purchase" the fairgrounds and that there are no finalized plans: "At this time, all we've done is sign an intent to purchase. So we'd have no plans any further than that right now... stay tuned," a county official told Sperling. The official said there would be future opportunities for public involvement if plans proceed.
Sperling also reported frequent late‑night racetrack activity in recent weeks, including lights on until midnight or later and grading activity. She suggested that if the county intends to build a modern fairgrounds similar to nearby Wofford City, officials should consider a location outside town (she recommended the bypass) rather than the original site.
There was no formal action recorded at the meeting to change zoning or to begin redevelopment; the county official's statement indicated only an intent to purchase has been signed and that further plans would be developed later with public engagement opportunities.
