Board members debated recommended revisions to policy A100, the district’s nondiscrimination and anti‑harassment policy, and moved to limit the changes after concerns that the proposed wording would narrow protections for some groups.
One trustee said the new draft "carves out" groups from Title IX protections and that the strikeouts under the Title IX language were troubling. "I don't see a benefit to adding it to this policy... I don't think the language is appropriate in our school board policies," the trustee said, expressing opposition to the recommended strikeouts.
Another member proposed a narrower approach: instead of adopting the full recommended language, the board should state simply that it will comply with the newly enacted state article. A motion carried to restrict the page‑one language in A100 to an explicit statement of compliance with Indiana Code 20‑2‑9.3 and to undo the strikeout on the Title IX language on the later page. The board directed staff to make those edits before posting the revised policy for public review.
District legal counsel (Church, Church, Hittle & Antrim) had recommended the broader edits to align with recent state and federal changes; board members said they accept legal recommendations but want policies they believe do not reduce student protections. The board will consider the revised policies at the next meeting.
