Rose Walker, a resident and organizer of a senior program, told the Meridian City Council she has experienced what she described as repeated racist encounters at the Meridian Activity Center and said the treatment discouraged longtime residents from using the facility.
“I have received so much racism since I have been there,” Walker said during the public‑comment portion of the council meeting. She described efforts to start a senior program (called Rose Walker’s Cards group) and said she pays for snacks and prizes to encourage participation. Walker said several longtime Black residents told her they “never heard of Meridian Activity Center” or felt they were not welcome there.
Walker said she had tried to meet with the mayor and had spoken with staff at the Meridian Activity Center, including “Cathy” and “Miss Jordan,” but said she had not been able to resolve the issues. She asked the council to address the situation.
The mayor or staff offered to speak with Walker after the meeting. The council did not record any formal motion or directive in response to her comments during the session; staff follow‑up was not documented on the meeting record.
Walker’s remarks were made during the public‑comment agenda; they were not entered as a formal complaint in the council minutes during the meeting. Council or staff records may include subsequent follow up if Walker files a formal complaint or requests a meeting.
