Philadelphia Transit briefs council on service in Meridian, seeks local support and Sept. 30 work session

Andrea Mitchell, representing Philadelphia Transit, told the council that her organization operates under a 5311-type transportation grant through MDOT and already provides service in Meridian and surrounding counties. She said Philadelphia Transit completed 2,189 trips in 2023 and 2,670 trips so far in 2024, serving trips that include employment, medical and shopping needs. Mitchell provided a city-rate pricing sheet she said is in use: $3 per stop within city limits, $8–10 one-way fares for trips outside the city limits within the region, and $20 one-way for Meridian-to-Jackson medical trips. She told the council the operator is ‘‘growing every day’’ and asked the city for local support; she said a formal resolution would be required for monetary support. Council staff invited Philadelphia Transit and other providers to a work session on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. to discuss the upcoming procurement (the city intends to put service out for bid). The council asked other transit providers to attend the same session. No funding decision was made at the meeting.
