District instructional staff updated the board on English-language-development results, summer programming and Title I funding during the instructional report.
WIDA results: staff said WIDA scores for English learners have moved students toward higher levels and that the district's population of English learners has grown consistently in recent years. A staff member credited coordinators and teachers with progress and noted the district's goal of moving students to Level 5 on the WIDA scale.
Summer programming and transitions: presenters summarized planned summer opportunities, including GC Reads for second- and third-graders who need additional I-Read support, CAM Invention, K101 for incoming kindergarteners in partnership with Purdue Extension at JB Stevens, high-school summer courses and on-site summer PE. The report said the high school facility and JB Stevens will be busy over the summer.
Title I: the board approved continued participation in the federal Title I program and authorized Joe Risch to serve as program coordinator. Staff said the Title I allocation is "a little bit under half a million dollars per year" and that the program supports reading and math interventions and pays part of the salaries for roughly eight staff positions.
Why it matters: WIDA results and Title I funding connect to instructional supports for students with greater needs; summer programs are intended to reduce learning loss and provide transition supports. The board approved Title I continuation and received the instructional updates as information.
