Peter Puffs preschool staff used the board’s spotlight time on Feb. 10 to demonstrate a classroom “nurture group” and describe the district’s first year implementing Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) at its preschool sites.
A preschool presenter described TBRI as an approach that “empowers their brains and bodies and helps in correcting them in ways that foster healthy development,” and said staff trained over the summer are using a set of five focus areas — felt safety, self-regulation, relationships, voice and self‑work — along with life-value phrases and the ALERT regulation tool to help children name and manage feelings.
The demonstration included a six-step nurture-group routine (rules, check-in with a talking teddy, band-aids/receiving care, skills practice, giving/receiving care and closing). Preschool staff guided a small group of students through a check-in question about favorite zoo animals, acknowledged “hurts” with band-aids and practiced polite phrases such as “yes, please” and “thank you.”
Staff said the nurture groups teach four components of healthy relationships — giving care, receiving care, negotiating needs with voice and practicing healthy autonomy — and that the activities are practiced playfully to maximize learning. The presenter also credited a TBRI consultant, Amy Abel, for on-site support during implementation.
No board action was required; the spotlight presentation was informational.
