The Greenfield Central board on Feb. 10 authorized district staff to proceed with replacing the high school gym floor and to move forward with a smaller renovation to convert the existing auditorium scene shop into a dance and theater studio.
District staff said the gym floor had not had a substantial overhaul since about 1972 and that the planned installation is a long-term investment, with a vendor estimating the new system should last about 50 years. The proposal includes subfloor work and multiple shipments, which staff said is reflected in the material and freight costs in the competitive bid package.
Facilities staff (Manning) said contractors that reviewed the site recommended a multi-component system used by pro teams and larger arenas. Board members asked for clarification on freight costs, which several members described as “a little high” relative to their expectations. The board approved the authorization and requested that staff seek a freight-cost explanation or a second opinion as part of final contract negotiations.
The board also approved using available bond proceeds to undertake the gym-floor project and, concurrently, to convert the auditorium scene shop behind the stage into a dance studio to give the district’s dance team a dedicated practice space. Staff said the conversion would be a fraction of the gym cost and would create economies of scale if both projects proceed together during the same work window.
A motion to authorize the projects carried by voice vote; board members indicated support and there was no recorded roll-call tally in the meeting transcript. Staff will proceed with final contracting pending confirmation of freight logistics and final design approval for gym floor graphics.
