District staff updated the North Spencer County School Corporation on multiple facilities projects and presented a recommended approach to required fire-alarm monitoring.
Superintendent Sheeters said the playground at Chris-to (transcript reference) elementary is the first priority because it is the only playground on that campus, and that the district expects that playground to be completed before Lincoln Trail’s project and before the school year begins. Interior renovations are underway, with the 200 hallway at the high school reported as nearly complete and casework wrapping up. The superintendent said the teen wellness clinic is on track for an August completion and that the middle school hallway and silent classrooms still need flooring and finishing work.
On career and technical education (CTE) space at the middle school, staff indicated a proposed change of facility is before the board; the superintendent said the board does not need to fund the change immediately but does need to approve the facility change as it does not overlap with current projects.
On safety systems, the superintendent described a plan to combine services from two Jasper, Indiana firms—Astro Security and Advantage Fire—to achieve both monitoring and remediation of deficiencies identified during a fire marshal visit and subsequent work. The superintendent said monitoring is required and that each vendor covers portions of the work; the recommendation was to use both in a coordinated approach. The transcript records discussion and recommended vendors but does not include a formal motion or vote approving contracts.
Two facility-use requests were approved: a CPR class in the library on July 15 for 33 Spencer teachers (requested by Spencer County Inbuilt Service) and a football sign-up event in the cafeteria on Aug. 14 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. (requested by an independent football organization). Motions to approve those requests were seconded and recorded as carried.
Why this matters: Playground and building renovations affect student safety and daily operations; required fire-alarm monitoring is a compliance and safety matter that the district is addressing through recommended vendor arrangements.
