The Moore County Board of Education reviewed and approved a five-year maintenance strategic plan that sets priorities for roofing, fencing, paving, and facility upgrades across district schools. District maintenance staff said the plan is a living document that may be adjusted when specific bids and project timing change.
District staff described roofing work at the high school as a multi-section project with a vendor quote of about $2.1 million for the full roof replacement; staff said the figure is being phased because the district cannot fund the entire cost in a single year. “We quote right now for 2,100,000.0,” a district presenter said when board members asked whether the roof line items referred to separate sections.
The plan also lists fence upgrades, teacher parking repairs, restroom upgrades at Eastside Elementary and the need for a new head unit for an intercom system.
Board members asked about a proposed camera upgrade quoted at $202,100,000 in the packet; meeting speakers clarified that amount represents a high-tech campus surveillance system. A maintenance staff member described the goal: “Essentially, what it has the capability of doing, if I highlight someone that comes in in the auditorium, I can trace them to the entire building every time they occur on the camera.” He said the system provides improved visuals and tracing capability and noted the district has piloted a system at one school.
Board members voted to approve the strategic plan for submission and annual updates; the item passed after a motion and second and a voice vote. Staff emphasized the plan is strategic, not binding, and that specific projects will be scheduled based on bids, funding, and other priorities.
District staff said camera installations and other security upgrades are being pursued reluctantly as part of safety improvements; no contract awards or vendor names were finalized at the meeting. Staff said they will provide further cost breakdowns and project phasing in subsequent reports.
