Bridge commission hears project updates; Corson's Inlet rehab delayed about two months

The Cape May County Bridge Commission received an update on Feb. 20 on capital improvement projects across the county, including timing changes, completed documentation and grant-seeking efforts.
Antonio Colón, project manager, reported that the Corson's Inlet Bridge rehabilitation has an estimated two-month extension to the current schedule but remains “on schedule with the updated timeline.” Grassy Sound Bridge superstructure rehabilitation documentation is complete and under review, and staff are exploring grant funding options for fender rehabilitation work and other projects.
Other updates included work on the Ocean City–Longport Bridge fishing pier (under review and with final constructability items approved with RVE), repair options for Townsend’s Inlet Bridge span locks to be explored for off-season work, and ongoing scour-abatement efforts at Grassy Sound and Middle Thorofare. The Middle Thorofare portion of the scour-abatement project was expected to be completed early next week, and project staff held a second progress meeting that morning on Ocean Drive (CR 621) improvements and bridge replacements.
The auxiliary drive system motor for one project is in transit; installation will be scheduled once all materials are received by TCS. For bridge replacement local concept development, requests for proposals were received on Jan. 29, 2025; Phase 2 advertisement is planned to occur 60 days after award, and the award was expected to be announced at the Cape May County meeting scheduled for March 22, 2025.
The commission also noted that preliminary NBIS (National Bridge Inspection Standards) inspection reports for the Ocean City–Longport bridge and the fishing pier have been received and are under review, with interim reports to follow. No formal actions were taken; the updates were provided for the commission’s information.
