Commission hears progress reports on Corson’s Inlet, Grassy Sound and other bridge projects

Colón said the Corson’s Inlet Bridge rehabilitation remains on an updated schedule that includes an estimated two-month addition to the original timeline, with a projected completion date of July 4, 2025. He reported that work at Middle Thorofare tied to scour abatement has been completed and that work at Grassy Sound is ongoing. For Grassy Sound, Colón said 100 percent of documentation for the superstructure rehabilitation had been received and was under internal review.
Other project notes: Colón said the Bridge Replacement Local Concept Development (LCD) study for Townsends Inlet and Corson’s Inlet was awarded at the county meeting on March 11, 2025 to Hardesty & Hanover in the amount of $2,490,529.86, with a kickoff meeting planned in a couple of weeks. He also reported that TCS was on-site beginning installation of an auxiliary drive system as part of a motor replacement at Middle Thorofare and that the fender rehabilitation program (OCLP/CI/TI/GS) is being sequenced with grant opportunities identified by consultant Triad.
Why it matters: the projects affect bridge availability, safety and long-term maintenance planning for the county’s primary coastal crossings. Several items cited grant-seeking and consultant work; staff described these as studies and ongoing construction or review activities rather than final design approvals.
Colón said preliminary National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) reports for the Ocean City-Longport Bridge and the Fishing Pier had been received and were under review; interim reports were expected shortly. The minutes record updates and planning but do not show formal commission votes on the construction items during this meeting.
Next steps noted in the meeting include review of the received documentation, staff follow-up on grant opportunities, and the scheduled kickoff for the LCD study. No schedule changes beyond the Corson’s Inlet projection were recorded in the minutes.
