Bridge Commission outlines timelines for multiple Cape May County bridge rehabilitations

At its April 17 meeting, the Cape May County Bridge Commission heard a status update on major capital projects from Project Manager Antonio Colón, who outlined schedules, outstanding documentation and next steps for several bridges serving the county.
Colón said the Ocean City–Longport Bridge fishing-pier project is awaiting finalized plans and scope from consultant RVE, with plans to advertise the project in early summer and begin construction in the fall. He said the Corson's Inlet Bridge rehabilitation remains on an updated timeline with an estimated two-month extension; the contractor must finish and clear the site by July 2. Documentation for the Grassy Sound Bridge superstructure rehabilitation has been submitted in full and is under review, and staff are exploring grant funding options. For Middle Thorofare, Colón reported that a fourth progress meeting was held the morning of April 17 and that TCS was on site starting installation of an auxiliary drive system for a motor replacement.
The update also covered systemwide work: scour-abatement activity at Grassy Sound and Middle Thorofare is ongoing at the abutment and grade beam with paving included, and all in-waterway work for those elements is complete. The commission continues planning for a multi-bridge fender-rehabilitation program (OCLP/CI/TI/GS) and is pursuing grant opportunities and sequencing analyses with consultant Triad. A local-concept development kickoff meeting for a bridge replacement program was held March 14; a site visit was described as planned in the coming weeks. Colón noted preliminary NBIS (National Bridge Inspection Standards) inspection reports for the Ocean City–Longport location and the fishing pier have been reviewed and sent back with comments; interim reports from RVE are under review.
The update provided project milestones, identified grant-seeking activity, and described work that will require continued contractor scheduling and consultant review. Commissioners did not take formal action on the projects during the meeting; the commission will continue consultant reviews, site visits and grant exploration as next steps. The commission's next regular meeting was rescheduled to May 29, 2025.
