The Cape May County Bridge Commission received project updates June 19 on multiple bridge rehabilitation and inspection efforts that will affect traffic patterns and seasonal operations along Ocean Drive.
Project manager Antonio Colón provided the commission with a status report on several sites, including the Ocean City–Longport Bridge, Corson's Inlet Bridge and Townsends Inlet Bridge. Colón told commissioners that the Corson's Inlet Bridge rehabilitation is “fully on track to meet July 2nd deadline” and that punch-list items have been sent to the contractor.
The report said single-lane traffic on Corson's Inlet has been reduced to flagging operations during weekday work hours. For Middle Thorofare, the commission logged a sixth progress meeting on June 19; shop drawings for a motor replacement are expected in the first week of July with installation scheduled for early fall. Grassy Sound Bridge documentation was reported as 100% received and under review, and staff said they are exploring grant funding opportunities for that work.
The commission also reported completion of a scour-abatement job affecting multiple bridges and a completed punch list awaiting as-built documents from the design engineer. Engineers from H&H completed on-site visits for bridge replacement local concept development, Triad has identified grant opportunities for a fender-rehabilitation program covering OCLP/CI/TI/GS (Ocean City–Longport/Corson's Inlet/Townsends Inlet/Grassy Sound), and staff said they will continue sequencing and funding due diligence.
On inspections, Executive Director Kevin Lare reported the commission is working with RVE to prepare a request for proposals for the 2025–2026 National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) cycle. Lare also reported ongoing administration for the 2023–24 NBIS contract work and noted the commission is coordinating next steps with its inspection partners.
Why it matters: the updates detail near-term construction and inspection steps that can change traffic configurations on Ocean Drive and affect summer travel. Several projects either are already limiting traffic to single lanes during work hours or will require temporary motor replacement and related installations.
No formal votes on capital projects were recorded in the transcript; the items were presented as staff updates. Next steps recorded in the meeting record include continuing review of Grassy Sound documentation, completion and transfer of as-builts for scour-abatement work, preparation of the NBIS RFP with RVE, and pursuit of grant funding options for several rehabilitation projects.
