Tomball Fire Station 5 unveils Harris County’s first safe‑haven baby box

Tomball City officials and firefighters dedicated a safe‑haven baby box at Fire Station 5 on the morning of the meeting, city staff announced during council reports.

Chief Joe (Tomball Fire Department) said the baby box, installed at 19900 Telge Road at Fire Station 5, provides an anonymous place where a person in distress may leave an infant without needing to hand the child directly to a firefighter at the station entrance. He said the box operates as part of the state safe‑haven law (sometimes called the "baby Moses" law), enabling anonymous relinquishment in appropriate circumstances.

City staff said the station location is set back and surrounded by trees to provide privacy. Officials noted the installation was coordinated with the city’s Emergency Services District and that the dedication included a visitor who helped start the organization that promotes baby boxes.

Council announcements also referenced the library dedication in Montgomery County and other community events that occurred that morning.
