The Tomball City Council on Aug. 25 presented a proclamation recognizing SmartWeek, a national campaign that promotes responsible firearm storage to reduce child and teen firearm deaths. Mayor Lori Plante Quinn read the proclamation and proclaimed the week of Aug. 25–29 as SmartWeek in Tomball. Elaine Hogan, a local Smart for Kids leader, and several volunteers accepted the proclamation and described the program’s emphasis on secure, unloaded and locked storage of firearms.
During announcements, Fire Chief Joe told the council the city will bless a donated safe‑haven baby box at Firehouse 5 on Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. He said the box, donated by community partners and modeled on a program started in Indiana by Monica Kelsey, allows a person to anonymously surrender an infant safely at a fire station in accordance with Texas safe‑haven laws. Chief Joe said the installation makes Tomball the first location in Harris County with a built‑in safe‑haven baby box and invited the public to attend the dedication.
Council members expressed appreciation for the volunteers involved in SmartWeek and for the donated baby‑box program as an additional option for infant safety and surrender consistent with state law.
