Trustees reviewed additions to the district athletic program including girls flag football and a middle school baseball team. Athletic director Mr. Gordon told the board the girls flag-football program will be supported largely by external partners for the first year and that the partner group will cover uniforms and coach pay for this year. "This first year of the program, the Indianapolis coach will do most of the funding ... as far as the uniforms, the coach's salary, they're gonna pay for that this year and this year only," Gordon said.
By contrast, Gordon said the middle school baseball program will be a district-costed program and that the district is working to set a salary for the head coach. "Middle school baseball is a cost to the district ... we are in discussion with now," Gordon told trustees. He also said that trustees had previously authorized adding sports and that early-season funding support made flag football feasible without district salary commitments this year.
Trustees asked for clarity about funding sources and salary responsibilities. Administrators said that for flag football the partner will cover coach compensation for the first year and that the district will revisit funding and salary for future years. For middle school baseball, staff said they are negotiating the coach's pay and will bring a recommendation to the board. Ending: The board approved adding the programs to the athletic slate and asked staff to return with a clear salary recommendation for the middle-school baseball head coach.
