A volunteer coordinator for the Keep [City] Beautiful Advisory Committee reported Sept. 2 that 101 vehicles went through this year’s Bring It recycling event, and organizers collected a range of household items though some counts remain incomplete. The coordinator said 17 residents used the on-site shredder service (13 tubs of paper), 42 residents used hazardous-waste drop-off and the contracted crew collected eight mattresses, about 3 cubic yards of metal and roughly 5 square yards of bulk trash.
The committee’s summary compared this year’s turnout with past years and showed a decline of about 20 cars and roughly 20 fewer people recycling, the coordinator said. The group also reported 31 residents recycled electronics or batteries and three donated clothing and other items to the Mission Store; two bags of clothing were provided to Simple Recycle. Committee members said they do not yet have a weight for the hazardous waste because the vendor has not reported poundage.
Organizers credited volunteers and city partners for installation and cleanup. The coordinator singled out Josh and Griff for handling collected trash and thanked Darlene and municipal-court staff who assisted at the event. Christian, a city staff member, and volunteers Tamari, Darius and George were also acknowledged for setup and painting tasks.
Committee members noted that some batteries taken by an independent recycler were removed from the event before the committee could record them and therefore were not charged or included in the official counts. The coordinator said the second check-in area setup (an ATV, canopy and trailer) and the canopy’s shelter during a rain shower helped operations but may have contributed to a slightly slower car line this year.
Organizers said they will collect final vendor poundage reports and circulate a full wrap-up chart that compares this year’s numbers with those from previous years. No formal policy changes or binding motions were made during the report; members discussed operational notes and thanked volunteers.
The committee adjourned at 6:17 a.m. after approving consent items earlier in the meeting.
