Councilors on Aug. 5 paused consideration of a proposed specific‑use permit (SUP) for a telecommunications monopole planned for the rear of 6004 Grissom Road and directed staff to resend notices to a larger area and return later for further review.
Planning staff had briefed council on a telecommunications company’s application to construct a 160‑foot monopole and small fenced ground‑equipment compound on a one‑acre commercial parcel that also contains an existing building. At the start of discussion several nearby residents said they had not received mailed notices before last month’s hearing and asked for more time to review plans.
Residents who live on El Verde Road and nearby testified that the proposed tower would sit a short distance behind private yards, would be visible from homes, and—citing studies they supplied—could affect nearby property values. One resident also urged the council to confirm coordination with aviation authorities, saying aircraft operating to nearby military or civilian fields should not be affected. Planning staff said notices were mailed to property owners within the required range, but that postal delivery problems sometimes occur and that council can expand the posted notice radius.
After brief discussion councilors voted to re‑notify property owners within 1,000 feet of the site and to postpone the SUP consideration to a meeting in mid‑September to give residents and the applicant time to present additional materials, including any FAA review and a revised notification list. The council also asked staff to invite the applicant back to answer residents’ technical questions. A prior planning commission recommendation to approve the SUP remains pending council action.
Ending: The postponement preserves resident input and gives staff and the applicant time to provide specific engineering and regulatory documentation requested by council and neighbors.
