Garrard County Fiscal Court approved the county's capitalization thresholds and a capital asset listing Monday, confirming the dollar thresholds and useful-life ranges for major asset classes used in financial reporting.
The court recorded the capitalization thresholds as follows: land improvements $10,000 (useful life 10'60 years); buildings and building improvements $20,000 (5'75 years); machinery and equipment $5,000 (3'25 years); vehicles $5,000 (3'25 years); infrastructure $20,000 (10'50 years). Court minutes state there were no changes from the prior year.
Magistrate Davis moved to approve the capitalization thresholds and Magistrate Preston seconded; the motion passed unanimously. A separate motion to approve the county capital asset listing was made by Magistrate Barker and seconded by Magistrate Day and also passed.
Why it matters: Capitalization thresholds determine what county purchases are recorded as capital assets versus operating expenses and affect the county's financial statements and long-term asset accounting.
