The Athens City Board of Education on Aug. 11, 2025, received an enrollment update showing 1,683 verified students across the district and recognized certified employees hired for the 2025–2026 school year.
Director of Schools Joe Barnett reported verified enrollment by school: Athens City Primary (grades K–2) had 553 enrolled and 548 verified; Athens City Intermediate (grades 3–5) had 574 enrolled and 572 verified; Athens City Middle (grades 6–8) had 579 enrolled and 563 verified, for a total of 1,683 verified students.
Principals recognized new certified hires for the coming school year. Those listed in the minutes include Elizabeth Ballew (6th-grade math, Athens City Middle School), Matthew Crabtree (6th-grade math, ACMS), Hannah Cordell (3rd grade, Athens City Intermediate School), Missy Huskey (media specialist, ACIS), Elizabeth Jay (5th grade, ACIS), Merranda Jones (3rd grade, ACIS), Jalen Sharp (3rd grade, ACIS) and Emma Ratcliff (1st grade, Athens City Primary School). Mike Simmons, principal of Athens City Middle School, also recognized Carmen Turnbough as ACMS pathway director; Turnbough was hired during the 2024–2025 school year but had not been previously recognized in minutes.
The meeting also recognized staff selected to serve on state instructional advisory committees: Lauren Derrick was named to the Dyslexia Advisory Council and Arielle Halsall to the Tennessee Department of Education English Learner Educator Working Group.
