The Fayette County Board of Education on May 8 selected three finalists for the permanent Director of Schools: Eddie Keel, Dr. Tameka D. Lewis and Don McPherson. Chairman Warner Speakman moved to proceed with the search by naming three finalists from the current TSBA pool; Dr. Mike Brown seconded the motion and it carried.
The action was taken by roll call. Board members announced their nominees aloud; the Board Secretary recorded the nominations and reported the tally: Eddie Keel received six votes, Dr. Tameka D. Lewis received seven votes, Don McPherson received two votes and David Martin received one vote. The board said it will coordinate a calendar and announce a date for interviews.
The motion constitutes a formal selection of finalists and begins the next step in the hiring process: interview scheduling and evaluation of the candidates. The board did not vote to hire any candidate at the May 8 meeting.
The selection followed the agenda item to “proceed with the search for a permanent Director of Schools” and used nominations from board members rather than a single slate. The board did not record further deliberations about each candidate during the roll call recorded in the minutes.
Chairman Speakman and Dr. Brown conducted and seconded the motion; the board will notify finalists and set interview dates at a future meeting or special session.
Meeting context: the board convened at 6:00 p.m. and adjourned at 7:39 p.m.; the finalists’ selection was a formal board action recorded during New Business.
