Warren County commissioners adopt resolution urging Governor and Attorney General to 'uphold their oaths' on immigration enforcement

The Warren County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on Feb. 26 to adopt a resolution calling upon Governor Phil Murphy and Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin to “uphold their oaths of office” regarding immigration enforcement. The resolution, introduced and carried by Commissioner James R. Kern and seconded by Commissioner Lori Ciesla, characterizes the issue as one of public safety and urges state officials to support enforcement of federal immigration laws.
Commissioner Kern framed the resolution on the meeting floor as a response to state policies that he and others see as limiting law enforcement’s ability to address illegal immigration. Kern said the board’s action will be sent to municipalities across Warren County and to clerks of the boards of county commissioners in the other New Jersey counties. Commissioner Ciesla spoke in support and said that immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility and that the board should urge the state to assist federal efforts.
The resolution language expresses the board’s position that persons who follow legal immigration procedures are welcome but that the county should demand enforcement against people who enter or remain without authorization. The county recorded a unanimous vote in favor. The resolution will be distributed to Warren County municipalities and to officials in the other 20 New Jersey counties, per the resolution text.
