Harlem Middle and High School students were recognized for selection to district ILMEA festival and for qualifying for state-level music opportunities; faculty and student-teacher also shared context about auditions and upcoming performances.
The Harlem Consolidated School District recognized middle- and high-school students who were selected for the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) district festival and named students who advanced to state-level music opportunities.
Jessica Koenig, choir director, told the board that 21 choir students attended the district festival and that 12 of those were present at the board meeting. She said three of the district festival choir students qualified for state-level choir in Peoria.
High-school band teacher (identified in the meeting as Mr. Perian) said students produce recorded auditions in October and that selections are competitive; he named Nolan, Morgan and Brielle as band students selected for district ILMEA this year and identified Chloe and Ariana as students representing Harlem High School choir. Mr. Perian and other staff noted two students had qualified for a future music educators seminar that includes an interview process and a competitive application; he said about 35 statewide are selected and two Harlem students were chosen.
A student teacher, Haley Hamilton, introduced herself as a senior studying instrumental music education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and said she will join district staff in upcoming events.
Board members and the superintendent congratulated the students and thanked staff for leading the programs. The board asked the music students to step forward for photos and praised the district’s music and performing arts offerings as extracurricular opportunities that provide alternative learning pathways.
The district said students will attend regional rehearsals in DeKalb in early November and the state event in Peoria in January.
