Board approves personnel actions and student travel requests, honors athletes headed to state

Harlem UD 122 trustees on May 19 approved the personnel agenda and addendum covering hires, transfers, resignations and a rescinded retirement, and they approved student travel requests for upcoming state competitions and national-bounding teams.

Doctor Terrell Guerrero presented the personnel slate. "We have 15 employments to look at tonight, nine transfers, two certified federation bank requests, three classified federation bank requests, 14 resignations ... and one rescinded retirement," Guerrero said while asking the board to approve the agenda.

Why it matters: personnel approvals change staffing for the district ahead of summer and the 2025'026 school year. The student-travel approvals allow qualifier teams and individuals to attend sectional and state competitions, contingent on final rosters and logistics.

Athletics and travel highlights included travel for track sectional qualifiers, a bowling team headed to nationals, and previously recognized swimmer Beau Shields, who qualified for state in two events, and Reid Allison, named the 2024'025 Illinois Athletic Directors Association Division New Athletic Director of the Year. The board also approved trips for bowling, track and other teams; district staff noted families often provide transportation for some events and that bus or van use depends on CBA limits and participant numbers.

Board action: the personnel agenda and student travel requests passed by roll-call vote during the meeting. Staff will finalize travel logistics, transportation and chaperone assignments in line with district policy and collective-bargaining limits.

Context: Administrators encouraged community recognition of seniors and student achievements at upcoming baccalaureate and graduation ceremonies. The board also celebrated scholarship totals reported at over $2 million for the graduating class as shared in the meeting.
