Superintendent reports worldwide PowerSchool breach, Mandela project civil work and AI attendance discussion

Superintendent Chavez told the Santa Fe Public Schools Board of Education on Jan. 16 that the district will send a notification about a worldwide PowerSchool data breach and stressed the breach was not specific to Santa Fe Public Schools.
Chavez said the district is drafting a notification letter and coordinating with communications to supply contact information for parents and students seeking more information; the superintendent emphasized PowerSchool is the vendor where the breach occurred.
Chavez also reported Education Week contacted the district about an article on SFPS’s classroom implementation of artificial intelligence and that district staff had given interviews; Education Week may send a photographer. Chavez described internal discussion of an AI-based attendance tool being piloted in other New Mexico districts but said SFPS is not yet part of that pilot. District staff are assessing how much district manpower would be needed to operate such a tool effectively and noted the tool mainly collects data for attendance coaches.
Finally, Chavez said civil (dirt) work on the previously approved Mandela International Magnet School site could begin in late spring or during the summer. He closed by reminding the board there is no school Jan. 20 and that the state legislative session begins Jan. 21.
