Santa Fe Public Schools honors 72 national board-certified educators; announces in-person pre-K/k registration dates

"Santa Fe Public Schools is thrilled to share that now it has 72 national board certified educators among its staff," Superintendent Chavez said at the board meeting, noting the district planned to honor newly certified teachers with certificates and a group photo.
District staff named newly certified educators for 2024 and recent renewals. Those named at the meeting included Deborah Angar (Atalaya); David Tolan (Salazar); Clarissa Riggins (Milagro/role not specified in transcript); and renewals including Eric Braden (Capital High), Nadine Porterfield Gurule (Nina Otero) and Michelle Rocha Gonzales (exceptional-needs specialist).
Chavez said National Board certification carries both a stipend and, for many teachers, advancement toward higher pay scale placement. "Once they become National Board certified, they also, receive a stipend for that certification, but they also now, I guess next year would receive level 3 pay if they're not already there," Chavez said.
The superintendent also announced changes to early-registration procedures. The district will continue online registration but will add in-person sessions: Feb. 8, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Aspen, and Feb. 12, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Milagro. Chavez said the district will partner with Somos on informational nights at several schools to help families navigate registration and ask questions.
Why it matters: National Board certification is a professional credential that the district said brings teacher compensation benefits and recognizes advanced practice; in-person registration events are intended to increase access for families without reliable online access.
