Ortiz Middle School expands Advanced Art program, presents student STEAM projects

Ortiz Middle School art teacher Cassandra Anaya told the Santa Fe Public Schools Board of Education on Jan. 16 that the district’s Advanced Arts elective has expanded from a seventh-grade pilot to include seventh and eighth graders.
Anaya, a graduate of Santa Fe Public Schools and a member of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, described studio instruction in 2-D and 3-D media, recycled materials and digital media as part of a STEAM emphasis. She described a clay-based speaker project that linked art and sound engineering, and a video self-portrait project developed with site staff that emphasized student identity and visibility.
Anaya said students presented work at the National Indian Education Association conference in Albuquerque in 2023 and at the New Mexico Public Education Department Literacy and Humanities convening in June 2024. Board members praised the students’ work and growth; several members said they could not believe the work was done by middle school students.
Ortiz Principal Bill Bilbo and Fine Arts Coordinator Christina Gonzalez joined Anaya in presenting; Anaya invited board members and community members to visit the classroom or contact her by email for more information.
