Jefferson County officials on record certified results from a May consolidated election that approved creation of the Jefferson County Central Ambulance District and an accompanying tax levy.
The county’s elections official, Kathy Holly, read the tallies during the board meeting. "We have a total voting for 2,561, 15.5%." Holly reported that 1,601 voters supported forming the district and authorizing a tax levy while 959 opposed it; there was one overvote.
The vote applied only to the neighborhoods within the proposed ambulance district’s levy boundary, county staff said during the meeting. Commissioners moved and seconded a motion to approve the consolidated election results and then signed the certification.
Commissioners said they had fielded conversations from residents on both sides and noted the creation of the district will shift how emergency services are funded within the district boundary. The board completed a formal roll call and approved the certification by vote.
The county clerk’s office will file the certified results, and the commission said the new district will proceed with establishing levy and service administration under state law.
County officials also noted turnout was low: the consolidated eligible-voter count used for the turnout calculation was 16,480, with 2,561 ballots cast. The board did not change the certified counts or the reported margin.
Looking ahead, commissioners said they would work with the new district’s board and existing ambulance providers on service agreements and dispatch arrangements.
