City staff on May 21 brought a developer’s concept for hangars at Midway Regional Airport to the Waxahachie City Council for initial feedback; no formal action was requested.
Dustin Dill, senior director of administrative services, said a private developer proposed a 50‑year ground lease on a grass infill parcel north of Airport Drive and Rex Odom Drive for a row of box hangars (30-by-60 feet with 18-foot door clearances) intended for leasing, not resale. Staff noted the project would require approval by both Waxahachie and Midlothian because the airport is jointly operated, and that no ramp or air-apron improvements were included in the concept.
Council members, including the council liaison to the airport, expressed reservations about siting hangars adjacent to the terminal and said the city should preserve terminal‑adjacent land for future airport facilities or for uses that better support long‑term airport plans. One council member noted 13 undeveloped acres on the south end of the airport that may be better suited for hangar development but would require infrastructure investment.
Several council members said they favored the concept of adding hangars to grow aviation activity but recommended that the cities consider constructing hangars themselves or otherwise investing in infrastructure instead of committing long-term leases that would limit future options. Council members emphasized coordinating further with Midlothian, which planned to discuss the proposal at its next meeting. No vote was taken; staff sought direction on whether to pursue the proposal further and to perform additional due diligence.
