Bernalillo County finance staff on Sept. 9 introduced a financial resolution to accept and budget $902,006.21 in opioid settlement payments the county received in mid‑July, and the commission approved introduction of the financial resolution for final consideration at the Sept. 23 meeting.
Senior financial analyst Audra Garcia explained the payments: $571,302.39 from distributor settlements with Cardinal Health and AmerisourceBergen and $330,703.82 from Allergan and Teva distributions, received in July. Garcia said the county has received a total of $25,517,956.14 in opioid-settlement distributions as of Aug. 8, 2025, and that these amounts are part of nationwide settlement distributions scheduled through 2038.
Garcia said finance will return to the commission on Sept. 23 with a final appropriation resolution and that the county is coordinating with the City of Albuquerque and program staff on the plan to invest future settlement receipts. County leadership said they will present updates and proposed program spending to the board prior to final appropriation.
The commission voted to introduce the financial resolution by voice vote and staff indicated further actions will propose how the funds are allocated to programmatic responses to opioid-related harms.
