Paul Hall, Granite County’s Road and Bridge superintendent, told commissioners Tuesday that the county needs core samples before deciding whether to reclaim and repave the road to the Trump area.
Hall said he had discussed the road with contractors who will take core samples to determine asphalt thickness and subgrade composition. “Without them sampled, we won't know that,” Hall said. He explained that samples will show whether the road base is adequate for reclamation or whether full reconstruction is needed; contractors will then give price estimates. Hall said chip-seal or other surface treatments will depend on the results and seasonal temperatures.
Commissioners approved hiring contractors to perform core sampling and to return cost estimates; Hall said scheduling and material choice would follow the sampling results and the financial estimate. He noted weather and temperature windows for chip-seal or paving can limit when work can be guaranteed.
No final resurfacing or construction contract was approved Tuesday; the decision is contingent on sampling and contractor cost proposals.
